For years I have been writing about electro-me- chanical and electronic
locking systems being the
business backbone and primary
profit center in the locksmith’s
future. I still believe that electronic access control, and its
many facets, is more important
to your future financial success
then ever before.
The biggest difference between what I was writing years
ago and what I am writing today
is this; The Electronic Access
Control revolution and its impact
on our industry, and our personal
paychecks, is no longer “coming”

the demand for electrified door
hardware of all types is growing
everyday! The really exciting
news is that today’s electrified
locking systems are more user-friendly then ever before.
Because of the practical and
effective “Plug-and-Play” nature
of these new, highly sophisticated
systems, and the fact that you
don’t have to be an electrical
engineer or electro-wizard to sell,
install, and service these systems,
it doesn’t make sense to stay out
of this highly profitable market.
If, in addition to your normal
locksmithing skills, you can replace the plug on a toaster, splice
a broken extension cord, or wire
up a doorbell — you have the
basic skills to install a stand alone
battery operated lock, an electric
strike, a magnetic lock, or an
electrified mortise lock.
Here’s more great news; If you
do get stuck or have a technical
problem, each of the manufactur-
ers of the products that I’m going
to show have excellent technical
support departments that can an-
swer all your questions and guide
you through their programs so
that you come out looking like
the professional you want to be.
These newer, more reliable,
and easier to install Electronic
Access Control (EAC) devices,
and systems, are engineered,
designed, and packaged to virtually insure fool-proof installation and setup.
Required skill levels aside,
you should be familiar with the
various products, their nomenclature and some of the terminology
involved. The following list is by
no means complete, but will give
you a basic insight to some of the
